JACOPA SETS THE STANDARD

Jacopa is once again setting the industry standard by transitioning to the latest revisions of ISO9001:2015 and 14001:2015. The Company’s achievement of the new standards, which are certified by its external UKAS registered certification body, have been driven by the benefits it will deliver to customers.

ISO 9001 is based on industry best practice and helps organisations demonstrate their commitment to quality. It provides assurance that the business has a robust quality management system in place which will continuously improve efficiency, time and cost saving and ultimately enhance customer relationships.

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for managing the environmental impacts of businesses. It prescribes controls for those activities that have an effect on the environment which includes the use of natural resources, handling and treatment of waste, and energy consumption.

There was a three-year deadline from the revisions being issued for companies to transition, with a final deadline of September 2018. Jacopa quickly identified the need to implement this change correctly and tasked a project team to manage the transition and the changes to be implemented.

The team attended various workshops and webinars to gain an understanding of the requirements and transition process, and on reviewing the company’s existing management systems decided to take the opportunity to update and streamline Jacopa’s systems, with the objective to move from it’s existing Integrated Management System (IMS) and create a new integrated Business Management System (BMS). This was then taken forward and an implementation programme developed to assess training needs with an estimated duration for the transition project of around 12 months.

Directors, senior managers and internal auditors all underwent targeted training on the requirements of the new standards and Annex SL, the new standard integration framework. Over the following nine months the company’s entire management system was reviewed, not only to meet the requirements of the new ISO standards, but also to streamline processes and reduce the amount of documentation.

The most intensive work focused on developing more detailed and reflective Process Maps, which meant in-depth discussions with many departmental managers to ensure the needs of the business and its customers were met with a consistent and logical flow path.

Following a period of testing, the new BMS was launched at the beginning of December 2017. This was followed a week later by an ISO9001 and 14001 Transition Audit conducted by the company’s independent external UKAS registered certification body. The audit confirmed that the management system complied with the requirements of the new ISO standards, well ahead of the September deadline.

Jacopa Managing Director, Alex Lloyd said, “This recognition from an independent third party is the result of a determined effort from everyone in the company. I would like to highlight the dedication and commitment of the transition project team, supported by the directors, senior managers and process owners, who have ensured our successful transition. The certification confirms Jacopa’s commitment to its current and prospective customers, investors, suppliers and other parties who depend on highly effective quality and environmental management.”

Jacopa is now turning its attention to the imminent release of ISO45001, which will, following a period of migration, replace its existing OHSAS 18001:2007 certification.
