JACOPA TAKES TO SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITY GREEN SPACES

JACOPA TAKES TO SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITY GREEN SPACES
Leading wastewater treatment and equipment specialist, Jacopa, is committed to supporting local communities, particularly green space initiatives.
One of the ways that the company achieves this is through its Community Social Responsibility/Social Value programme which enables employees to volunteer to help with a variety of schemes. The latest project involved working with Sandwell Council to restore steps at Sot’s Hole Local Nature Reserve in West Bromwich; an ideal initiative for Sandwell-based Jacopa. Sot’s Hole, important locally for wildlife, geology and education, is a wet woodland with a stream and recently created pool, which supports a variety of flora and fauna including woodland bird species. It also provides the only access to Sandwell Valley Country Park but the steps, forming part of this route, were desperately in need of restoration. Sandwell Council arranged the materials and Jacopa’s volunteers carried out the work, supported by the Countryside Ranger team. As a result, visitors to the Local Nature Reserve now have better and safer access to the country park – and an opportunity to explore wonderful areas of open countryside.

JACOPA – DELIVERING IMPORTANT NETWORK AND STORM CAPABILITY AND PRODUCTS
Combined Sewer Overflow screens are essential safety features for the sewerage network and a vital part of stormwater management, providing vital screening for stormwater overflows to ensure discharges meet environmental regulations.
It has never been more important to protect our rivers and coastal waters, ensuring clean water for people and wildlife, including marine life. At times, however, this can prove challenging for water companies given that the vast majority of the UK’s sewer network is a combined sewage and storm water system – meaning sewage and rainwater flow in the same pipes. Even without the rainwater, much of the sewer network operates close to capacity.
During intense storms, periods of prolonged heavy rain or when pumping stations fail because of a power outage or other reason, the volume of surface water exceeds the capacity of the sewer pipes. Sewage then backs up swiftly, defeating the practicable response time of the system and the Combined Sewer Overflows funnel the excess wastewater into the environment. Whilst this will result in some pollution, it can be preferable to flooding homes, shops and work places.
As a leading expert in wastewater treatment and systems, Jacopa offers a full solutions for clients facing the challenges of Combined Sewer Overflows by providing a range of advanced and innovative CSO screens, designed to retain sewage debris and other bulk solids within the sewer prior to discharge. With a wide range of screens, including powered and non-powered, self-cleaning and simple static screens, there are options to suit most applications including complex configurations and high volume frequent spill CSOs. Offering sediment retention solutions, these CSO screens provide effective and economic ways to reduce the amount of sewage solids and debris discharged into the environment by the CSOs.
Jacopa’s experienced team is able to advise on the best screen for a site, taking the capture requirements, all hydraulic conditions and the structure of the Combined Sewer Overflow into account. One of the most popular CSO screens is the Raked Bar Screen which is able to retain screenings in the foul sewer for transportation to treatment. The Raked Bar Screen is ideally suited to both new and existing CSO chambers where high frequency spills can be expected.
CSOs are – and will continue to be – fundamental to water companies’ stormwater responses but many existing screens have been in service for up to, and some being over, 20 years and are likely to require servicing or replacing. The experienced team and comprehensive product range at Jacopa is well equipped to carry out the work. https://jacopa.com/network-storm/

JACOPA WINS MAJOR HI-FLOW REFURBISHMENT CONTRACT
Wastewater treatment systems and solutions experts Jacopa have won a key contract to refurbish a number of its renowned Jones & Attwood Hi-Flow fine screens at a wastewater treatment works in the UK.
The company will also provide Hi-Flow screen training for operators, either onsite or at the company’s unique specialist workshop, during the refurbishment.
The work will entail removing the cleaned screens from site using a crane, transporting them to Jacopa’s workshop, fully stripping them down and thoroughly inspection. At this point, Jacopa’s expert engineers will advise the client if any additional work is required to bring any screen back to an optimum operating condition, after which the screen will be refurbished, returned to site, tested and commissioned by its expert and dedicated technicians.
The refurbishments will be undertaken on a “like for like” basis for replacement of parts, compliant with the original specifications – as the Hi-Flow OEM manufacturer, Jacopa is perfectly placed to provide the best possible service. Where parts have been superseded by modern equivalents, the company will provide updates for operation and maintenance manuals.
Jacopa will replace key parts such as connecting links and rods, perforated panels, and the rotating brush assembly, as well as a new main head shaft and a complete set of screen lifters.
Jacopa Managing Director Alex Lloyd said: “We’re delighted to be given the opportunity to return these iconic Jones & Attwood screens back to full working order. As the OEM, we have a better understanding of the process equipment than most M&E maintenance companies, and we work closely with our customers to ensure that their assets provide the best possible service. The Hi-Flow screen is renowned for its reliable solids removal performance, and the refurbishment will enable it to provide many more years of excellent service.”

THIRD ACHILLES AUDIT UNDERLINES ONGOING SUCCESS
Jacopa has continued its successful run of Achilles B2 Audit certification with another excellent result for the third year running. Once again, the company has scored highly for both ‘Management Systems’ and ‘Site Application’, as well as other areas where the auditor has recognised performance over and above the requirements of legislation or industry best practice.
The two-day audit involves Achilles auditors closely scrutinising the company’s performance across a wide range of issues such as corporate social responsibility and on-site incidents. Involvement in the audit also provides leadership for downstream suppliers to improve their business operations year on year.
Achilles collects and validates supplier data and mitigates risks, providing insights to help companies build more secure, sustainable and better-performing supply chains. The auditing is driven by customer feedback and tailored to the needs of the utilities sector. Jacopa’s ongoing perfect results provide additional assurance to customers who rely on collaborating with premier suppliers, and underlines the company’s position as an industry leader.
Jacopa’s QHSE Manager Tony Hinton said: “We are delighted that our ongoing performance in the Achilles Audit has once again been exemplary. We are always seeking ways to improve our management systems because our main goal is to meet and exceed customer needs. Our Achilles certification is a key performance measure and demonstrates our commitment to providing our customers with the best possible products and services while meeting the very highest safety requirements.”

CREATIVE TRIBUTE TO THE NHS
May 5th 2020
CREATIVE TRIBUTE TO THE NHS
Jacopa’s Parts and Service Manager Neil Sandell has made his own creative tribute to the NHS in his spare time, fabricating a ‘thank you’ sign for his own GP surgery and giving away more for local children to take away and paint up as their own ‘thank you’ messages.
He explains: ‘I created a full-size sign and painted it – that was given away to a lady that works in a local GP surgery to cheer up the staff who have worked very hard over recent weeks.’
‘With my CNC [computer numerical control] design in place it was a fairly simple matter of making three smaller designs and cutting them from MDF. The results were simply and safely sealed and left blank for any local children to take away free of charge and paint, after which they could either keep them for themselves or maybe give them to someone they know working hard within the NHS.’
Given the difficult time many people are experiencing financially, Neil didn’t charge for the design but, if asked, he recommended that people give what they could to his chosen charity, Captain Tom Moore’s JustGiving fundraiser for the NHS.
Neil’s NHS tributes were purely for local people, so nobody had to make an unnecessary journey to pick one up, he stresses. ‘There are a lot of children living nearby and many go for family walks every day straight past my house. People communicated with me through Messenger and collected them from my porch, observing social distancing rules.’
Neil gave away about 20 signs over the weekend. Jacopa Managing Director Alex Lloyd says: ‘We’re all very proud of Neil’s efforts: at a difficult time, we are all looking to find ways to contribute and this is a typically generous gesture from one of our fantastic employees.’

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
March 17th 2020
CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
Jacopa has implemented its Business Continuity Plan in response to the COVID-19 threat and anticipation of further UK government measures that impact the supply of goods and services to its customers.
Jacopa’s objective is firstly to fully support employees to ensure the risks of transmission of the virus are minimised by fully complying with UK government measures. Following on, to then operate the business under its Business Continuity Plan, taking account of the well-being of employees and all others in the supply chain, while maintaining its business to deliver goods and services in the exceptional circumstances facing all businesses.
A clear condition and constraint of operating the business is to take measures for ‘everyone to stop non-essential contact with others and to stop all unnecessary travel’.
Jacopa has set up its Coordination Team to ensure all planning is reviewed and fully implemented, with continuous monitoring of the impacts of current and new UK government measures on employees and business continuity.
Jacopa is able to operate effectively with a large proportion of its workforce working at home in accordance with UK government direction, using the investments made by the company in its leading Information Technologies and Information Systems that are fully accessible to employees working from remote locations. The front line workforce, such as service engineers, installation teams and factory and warehouse employees, are subject to working arrangements covered by specific contingency plans, to ensure as far as is practicable continuity of service, while considering their well-being and UK government measures.
The contingency plans in place mean that any customer, supplier or other partner will be able to communicate with their normal Jacopa contact or a covering person during the period of disruption. As the situation with COVID-19 develops further, updates will be provided on how these impact Jacopa and the goods and services provided to customers.
